Doritos is corn, oil and a seasoning. The corn and the oil are never the problem. The seasoning almost always is. Our database holds 154 Doritos products from the US, the UK, Europe, Australia and Latin America. Ten pass our vegan check, 95 fail, and 49 stay open. Of the 95 fails, 92 fail on milk in one form or another.
Where the milk is
Doritos seasonings are built on dairy powders. The US Nacho Cheese bag lists corn, vegetable oil, corn maltodextrin, then "less than 2%" of cheddar cheese, whey, buttermilk, romano cheese, whey protein concentrate, skim milk and more. Cool Ranch has no cheese in the name and still lists lactose, whey and skim milk. The UK Cool Original seasoning says "flavouring (contains milk)". The UK Tangy Cheese lists whey powder and cheese powder from milk. Spicy Nacho, Flamin' Hot Nacho and the Australian Cheese Supreme are the same story.
Counted across the 95 fails: milk named outright on 79 bags, cheese on 68, whey on 62, buttermilk on 54, lactose on 34, caseinate on 17, milk powder on 14, cream on 11. Three bags also list egg, all of them creamy dips or sour cream flavours, and one lists honey.
The lesson is that "cheese" in the flavour name is not the test. Cool Ranch and Cool Original have no cheese in the name and fail on whey and milk anyway. The seasoning sub-list is the test.
The ten that pass
Six of the ten passes carry a vegan mark on the pack in our data, and the mark is doing the work.
- Chilli Heatwave Tortilla Chips, UK: corn, vegetable oils (corn, sunflower, rapeseed), chilli seasoning with sugar, flavourings, flavour enhancers and spices. Vegan mark on the pack.
- Sweet Chilli Pepper and the German Sweet Chili: vegan mark.
- Dippers Naturel and Dippas: the plain, lightly salted dipping chips. Corn, oil, salt. The Dippas carry a gluten-free mark too.
- Original Salted Corn Chips: corn, vegetable oil, salt. No mark needed; there is nothing on the list to question.
- Hot Salsa and Bits Twisties Honey Barbecue: vegan mark on the pack, and the "honey" in the Twisties name is a flavour, not the ingredient.
Chilli Heatwave: the recipe changed
Chilli Heatwave is the bag people ask about most, and our data holds both answers. An older UK Chilli Heatwave record carries a vegetarian mark and milk in its allergen data, and fails. The current UK Chilli Heatwave Tortilla Chips record carries a vegan mark and passes. Two further Chilli Heatwave records list flavourings with no source and no mark, and stay open.
The point is not which of these is "right". They are different packs from different years. If the bag in your hand carries the vegan mark, the answer is yes. If it carries only a vegetarian mark, read the seasoning for milk. If it carries neither, the flavourings line is open.
The 49 that stay open
Every one of the 49 open verdicts is the same line: a flavouring or "natural flavors" with no stated source, on a bag with no vegan mark. Most of them are sweet chilli, salsa and lime flavours that contain no dairy: the US Spicy Sweet Chili lists soy sauce, sugar, vinegar and spices; the Australian Thai Sweet Chilli lists sugar, salt, hydrolysed vegetable protein and spices. Nothing animal is named. A flavouring can still be carried on a dairy or animal base, and the pack does not say, so our check reports "not sure" rather than a yes it cannot support. The Malaysian Sweet Chili, fried in palm olein, is the same case and also fails the palm oil check.

How to check a bag in the shop
- Look for the vegan mark first. On Doritos it appears on the sweet chilli family and the plain dipping chips, and it settles the flavourings question.
- Read the seasoning sub-list for milk, whey, cheese, buttermilk, lactose and caseinate. Cheese flavours and ranch flavours have them; so does Cool Original.
- Check the allergen line. "Contains milk" on a bag with no cheese in the name is common.
- Plain salted corn chips are corn, oil and salt. They pass with or without a mark.
Every Doritos product in our database has its own page with the ingredient list and the vegan, halal and palm oil verdicts side by side. The Doritos vegan list shows the passes and the vegan chips and snacks category compares other brands. For the snacks that pass without trying, see Accidentally vegan snacks, and for where dairy hides in general, Where milk hides.
