Are Skittles halal? US and UK recipes, gelatin, and the E120 packs

We read 100 Skittles labels. The chewy originals contain no gelatin anywhere, 56 pass our halal check outright, and the packs that stay open do so for three reasons. The gummies are a different product.

Skittles is one of the most searched halal candy questions, and the short answer is better than most people expect. Our database holds 100 Skittles products from the US, the UK, Europe, Canada and Australia. Fifty-six come back as a clear yes on our halal check. Not one comes back as a fail. The remaining 44 are "not sure", and almost all of them fall into three groups that are easy to recognise on the pack.

What is in a chewy Skittle

The recipe of the classic chewy Skittle is short and, on both sides of the Atlantic, free of animal ingredients by name.

The US pack of Original Skittles lists sugar, corn syrup, hydrogenated palm kernel oil, citric acid, tapioca dextrin, modified corn starch, natural and artificial flavors, colours (Red 40 Lake, Yellow 5, Blue 1 and so on), sodium citrate and carnauba wax.

The UK pack of Skittles Fruits lists sugar, glucose syrup, palm fat, citric and malic acid, dextrin, maltodextrin, flavourings, modified starch, colours (E162, E163, E170, E160a, E100, E132, E133), trisodium citrate and carnauba wax. That pack carries The Vegan Society mark in our data.

Nothing in either list comes from an animal. Palm fat is a plant oil. Carnauba wax is scraped from the leaves of a Brazilian palm. The colours on the UK pack are beetroot red, anthocyanins from plants, curcumin and synthetic blues. That is why the chewy originals, sours, tropical and wild berry packs make up most of the 56 passes, from Sour Skittles to Skittles Tropical and Skittles Wild Berry.

One record in our data, a US Skittles pack, carries a halal label. That is the exception. Most Skittles packs carry no halal mark at all, and the yes verdicts rest on the ingredient list, not on a logo.

The three reasons a pack stays open

Forty-four packs come back "not sure". This is what holds them:

Gelatin: 11 packs. These are not chewy Skittles. They are Skittles Gummies, Wild Berry Gummies, Skittles Fruit Snacks, the UK Squishy Cloudz and Fruit Strings. The gummy recipe is corn syrup, sugar, modified corn starch, water and gelatin. The pack does not say whether the gelatin is pork or beef, and no pack in our data carries a halal mark, so the verdict stays open. If you want a halal answer on a Skittles product, this is the line to check first: "Gummies" on the front means gelatin on the back.

E120 and carmine: 6 packs. Older European packs of Skittles Fruits list E120 among the colours, and a Canadian Tropical Skittles pack lists carmine by name. E120 and carmine are the same thing: a red colouring made from cochineal insects, which most halal certifiers reject. Newer UK packs have replaced it with plant reds (E162 beetroot, E163 anthocyanins), which is why the current UK recipe passes and the older one does not. Our E120 page covers the colouring in detail.

An emulsifier with no source: 11 packs. UK Skittles Giants and Chewies list "emulsifier lecithin" without saying what the lecithin is made from. Lecithin is nearly always soy or sunflower, but the pack does not say so, and our check does not guess. Several of these packs carry a vegetarian mark and the Darkside pack carries The Vegan Society mark, which settles the animal question in practice, but a vegan mark is not a halal mark.

The rest of the 44 are packs whose ingredient list is in a language we do not fully read, or whose text on file is a poor scan. Those are data gaps, not ingredient problems.

US vs UK: what actually differs

The flavourings are the one item where the two markets read differently. US packs say "natural and artificial flavors", UK packs say "flavourings". Neither names a source. Four US-style packs in our data come back "not sure" on that item alone, but the main Original pack passes, and in a sugar-and-starch candy the flavouring is not where animal ingredients usually hide.

Are Skittles vegan?

Since the question usually comes up together: 9 of the 100 packs pass our vegan check, and every one of them carries a vegan mark on the pack, including the UK Skittles Fruits, Skittles Desserts and Skittles Red. Nineteen fail, and the reasons are the same two: gelatin in the gummies and E120 or carmine in the older packs. The other 72 stay open because "flavourings" on a pack with no vegan mark is a question we do not answer for the manufacturer. For the vegan question, the mark on the pack is the deciding line; for the halal question, the ingredient list usually is.

How to check a pack in the shop

  1. Front of the pack: if it says Gummies, Fruit Snacks, Squishy Cloudz or Strings, look for gelatin in the list. It will be there, and without a halal mark the pack stays open.
  2. Chewy packs: scan the colours. E120 or carmine means an insect-derived red. E162, E163 and the number-only US colours do not.
  3. Look for an emulsifier. If the pack names it (lecithin) without a source, that is the reason our check hesitates, and a vegetarian or vegan mark on the pack answers the animal question.
  4. Everything else in a chewy Skittle is sugar, syrup, plant fat, acids, starch and wax.

Every Skittles product in our database has its own page with the ingredient list and the halal, vegan and palm oil verdicts side by side. The Skittles halal list shows the passes, and the halal hub covers the wider sweet aisle. For the same question on gummy bears, see Are Haribo halal?.

FAQ

Do Skittles contain gelatin?

The chewy Skittles (Original, Sour, Tropical, Wild Berry, Smoothies, Desserts) do not list gelatin on any pack in our data. Skittles Gummies, Fruit Snacks, Squishy Cloudz and Fruit Strings do.

Are Skittles halal in the UK?

The current UK Fruits, Sour, Tropical and Wild Berry packs pass our check on their ingredient lists and carry a vegan mark. The Giants and Chewies come back "not sure" because of an emulsifier with no stated source. None of the UK packs in our data carry a halal certification mark.

Are Skittles halal in the US?

The US Original, Sour, Tropical and Wild Berry chewy packs pass our check. US Gummies contain gelatin of unstated origin and stay open.

Why do older European Skittles say E120?

E120 is cochineal, a red colouring made from insects. Older EU Fruits packs used it. The current UK recipe uses plant-based reds instead, which is why the two packs get different verdicts.
