Are Pringles gluten free? We checked 184 tubes

176 of the 184 Pringles labels in our database fail the gluten-free check, every one of them on wheat or barley. Here is where the wheat sits on the US and European tubes, and why the three that pass are not the ones you are probably holding.

Pringles look like potato, and potato is gluten free. The tube tells a different story. Our database holds 184 Pringles labels from the US, the UK, mainland Europe, Latin America and Asia. 176 fail our gluten-free check, 3 pass and 5 stay open. Every one of the 176 lists wheat or barley somewhere on the label, and not one Pringles label in our records carries a gluten-free claim.

Where the wheat is

A Pringles crisp is not a sliced potato. It is a dough of dried potato and other flours, pressed and fried. The other flours are where gluten comes in.

The US Original tube lists dried potatoes, vegetable oil, degerminated yellow corn flour, cornstarch, rice flour, maltodextrin, mono- and diglycerides, salt and wheat starch. The wheat starch is last on the list, so there is not much of it, but the tube makes no gluten-free claim, and for coeliac disease that claim is what counts.

The European recipe uses more. The Original sold in Europe lists dehydrated potatoes, sunflower oil, then wheat flour, ahead of the rice flour. The German tube says the same thing in German, Weizenmehl.

So the answer does not depend on where you bought the tube. The amount and the form change, the wheat does not go away.

Flavours add barley

The seasoning can bring a second gluten grain. The UK Salt & Vinegar tube lists "salt and vinegar seasoning (barley)", because malt vinegar is made from barley. Other Salt & Vinegar labels we hold say the same thing in their own words. Even if the base were wheat free, this flavour would still fail.

The three that pass

Three Pringles labels pass our check on their ingredient lists. One is the US Harvest Blends Sweet Potato tube, a multigrain line made from corn, rice and potato. The other two are a US Mingles snack and a South African Peri Peri tube whose label lists "starch" without naming the plant.

None of the three carries a gluten-free claim, and none is a regular Pringles tube. If you need to avoid gluten strictly, a pass on the ingredient list is not the same as a tested, labelled gluten-free product, and shared production lines are a real risk with a brand whose main range is made with wheat.

The five we cannot answer

Five records stay open because the text on file is not a usable ingredient list: labels in languages our check does not cover yet, and scans that picked up the nutrition panel or a promotion printed on the tube instead of the ingredients. We would rather say so than guess.

If you want a gluten-free crisp

Plain potato crisps, sliced and fried rather than made from a dough, are where the gluten-free options are. Our gluten-free crisps list shows every one that passes, brand by brand, and our guide to reading labels for gluten covers the other places wheat hides, from starch and dextrose to malt.
