The honest version
The most common "could be either" additive in the supermarket. The fatty acids can come from vegetable oil or from animal fat, and the E-number is identical either way. Vegan and halal certifiers both have to trace it to the factory.
When our checker meets E471 on a label, it does not guess: products carrying ambiguous additives get a “check the label” verdict, with the ingredient named, so you can decide or ask the manufacturer.
