Are M&M's gluten free? 105 packs, and the Crispy and Pretzel problem

Plain, Peanut, Peanut Butter and Almond M&M's list no gluten grain and pass our check. Crispy, Pretzel and the biscuit spin-offs do not. We read 105 M&M's labels; here is where the wheat and barley malt are.

M&M's are one of the sweets where the flavour name genuinely predicts the answer. Our database holds 105 M&M's products. Fifty-six pass our gluten-free check, 18 fail, and 31 stay open because of the label text on file. Every one of the 18 fails is a variety with a cereal inside the shell or a baked product built around the candy. The plain chocolate ones are not among them.

The ones that pass: chocolate, sugar shell, nuts

The US Milk Chocolate M&M's list milk chocolate (sugar, chocolate, skim milk, cocoa butter, lactose, milkfat, soy lecithin, salt, flavours), sugar, corn starch, corn syrup, dextrin, colours and carnauba wax. No wheat, barley or rye. Peanut M&M's add peanuts. Peanut Butter, Almond, Minis, Salted Caramel and Crunchy Caramel are the same picture: chocolate, a sugar shell, a nut or a caramel, and nothing from a gluten grain.

The Australian Peanut M&M's record carries a halal mark in our data, which is beside the point here but worth knowing.

One thing the passes do not carry is a gluten-free mark. Not one of the 105 packs in our data has a certification logo or a printed "gluten free" claim. The 56 passes are ingredient-list passes. Mars prints a "may contain" allergen line on many packs, and what it names varies by factory. Our check reads the ingredient list; the "may contain" line is a cross-contact statement, and what it means for you depends on how strict you need to be. We wrote about that line in What "may contain" really tells you.

The ones that fail: Crispy, Pretzel, and everything baked

Crispy. The UK and European Crispy M&M's list sugar, cocoa mass, rice flour, skimmed milk powder, cocoa butter, palm fats, starch, whey, glucose syrup and, further down, barley malt extract. The crispy centre is rice, which is fine, but the malt extract that flavours it is barley. The French M&M's Crispy and the Crispy family pack list "orge" (barley) and carry gluten in the allergen data. The US Crispy Chocolate Candies list barley malt in the crisp rice. Every Crispy record in our data fails, and so does any mixed bag that contains Crispy pieces, such as the Mix Peanut, Chocolate, Crispy.

Pretzel. The US Pretzel M&M's have a wheat pretzel in the middle: wheat flour, barley malt. The name says it.

Crunchy Mint. The US Crunchy Mint list malt extract from barley in the crunchy centre.

The baked spin-offs. M&M's Cookies, the French Cookies Double Chocolat, M&M's Biscuit, the Crispy Tablette bar and the Kellogg's Rice Krispies bars with M&M's all list wheat flour or malt. The M&M's spread with crispy pieces carries gluten in its allergen data.

Counted across the 18 fails: gluten in the allergen data on all 18, malt or malt extract on 12, wheat on 7, barley on 6, wheat flour on 5, barley malt on 5.

The 31 that stay open

Twenty-eight are packs whose ingredient list on file is in a language our check does not fully read: Polish, Russian, Turkish, Arabic and a few bilingual packs. Three are poorly scanned. None of these is a hidden Crispy; they are the same Peanut and Milk Chocolate recipes with a label we could not settle. The list on the pack in your hand will answer faster than our record.

How to check a pack in the shop

  1. If the name says Crispy, Pretzel, Crunchy Mint, Cookie or Biscuit, there is a gluten grain inside. Barley malt extract is the one people miss; it is a flavour in the rice centre, not a grain you can see.
  2. Plain, Peanut, Peanut Butter and Almond list chocolate, sugar, colours and the nut. Read the list once to confirm.
  3. Look at the "may contain" line. It varies by country and by factory, and it is the line that matters if cross-contact matters to you.
  4. Mixed bags are only as good as their weakest piece. A bag with Crispy in it fails.

Every M&M's product in our database has its own page with the ingredient list and the gluten-free, vegan and halal verdicts side by side. The M&M's gluten-free list shows the passes and the gluten-free chocolate category compares other brands. For the grain names to scan for, see Reading labels for gluten.
